Communication Laboratory are happy to announce the durational performance artwork ” Identity Politics” by Joakim Stampe during Supermarket Stockholm Independent Art Fair 2017.
The work itself will for approximatly three hours on Friday and three more hours on Saturday touch the concepts of identity, community belonging, cultural appropriation and political correctness.
We asked the artist: ”Why have you decided to make ”Identity Politics” at the Supermarket Stockholm Independent Art Fair 2017?
”I believe that we all are living in a world where questions about who we are and where we come from exists beneath the surface or is shouted in our face.
And if we embrace tight group-based identities too fiercely, we grasp to the cages in which others would seek to put us. We limit our own notion of who we are, and in presenting ourselves as one of a membership, a representative of our type, we ask not to be seen.
I recently did a performance action in Sweden (at Fylkingen in Stockholm), and afterwards I was asked how I was thinking and how I “dared” to use material from the Sapmi history in my work? The question bounced around in my mind, I was still full of adrenaline because it had just gone 10-15 minutes after I got out of my action.
Well the person who asked the questions could of course not know that my mother during my whole childhood told us children that she have Sami blood in her family and then of course we her children had the same.. and that we always believed in her story.
This attracted some thoughts and feelings and questions in me so this performance action is an open an ongoing work in progress.
Do I really need to have a Sapmi hat on my head for make a work that crossing the identity? And by the way, my father was Danish, my mother is Sapmi – Swedish, and I am an bastard. Who is appropriating what? Without permission..who should I ask?”

about Communication Laboratory:
Food is important. It is not only to fill our stomach, our desire and lust that reflect on ones cultural identity, nostalgia and memory. How does one feels that one day when your favorite food, or food that you believed to be super food, that you recall in memory, no longer safe for consumption due to pollution or human manipulation?
A worse feeling is assumption, that ones suppress consciousness; continue to consume food that is not fix to human consumption with doubt and without a choice? We consoles our self, ‘it is fine, we don’t eat it often, it is not going to harm us that much.’ When you realized the fact of these polluted and human manipulated food is growing and everywhere. What left in our feeling, is sadness, of feeling small and powerless, and ignorant of how to fight back with confusion.
