4th event: NIAN Svalbard

10 September – 17 September 2018

Organised by Arctic Action, Longyearbyen Norway

The artists arrived in Svalbard for the first time ever with its overwhelming and fantastic wilderness. Where the feeling of a pristine and naked landscape is only one minute away from settlement which is raw and beautiful. The artists assumed the challenge of creating performance art in this rough, windy and cold natural landscape for eight days based on their small importance.

The performance art festival started with an opening ceremony at Artica Svalbard, where the artists with short presentations and also some performance actions in and outside Artica’s premises were shown an interested local public from Longyearbyen.
Artists made their own performance art actions around Longyearbyen in various places, at the harbor, on the beach, in the mountains, and around different places in the valley.
A collective performance was made in the school yard for surprised students where the artists interacted with their action art, after which the artists discussed with the students what they experienced and seen the artists do.

One of the fantastic program items was a trip to the Pyramid in the north, an abandoned mining town from the time when the Soviet Union existed, where artists discovered the really wild and possible danger, no one may be outdoors without rifles because of polar bears, it requires a guide who followed the artists continuously. Ms. Gunnar, Stein Henningson’s boat took artists to the big glacier, Nordenskiöld. Artists experienced a new challenge to present performance art under audiences, to nature, to the camera and to some visitors. There in the raw wilderness, the artists learned to work with the forces of nature instead of as normal; wide and in nature.

Participated artists:

Joakim Stampe, Chuyia Chia, Ursula Sepponen, Stein Henningsen, Peter Rosvik, Kaisa Luukkonen, David Sebastian Lopez Restrepo och Sunniva Gudmundsdóttir Mortensen.
